Since its inception in 2006, CMS’s commitment to delivering the world-class building envelope solutions has seen it grow to become Scotland’s leading façades provider.

Recently rebranded CMS Group, the company has updated its business structure to reflect this success – and its ambitions for the future.

The organisation now operates under three distinct divisions: CMS Façades, CMS Window Systems and CMS Trade, and is supported by the launch of a new company website: www.thecmsgroup.com.

Each division serves one of the clearly defined markets to reflect the continued development and growth of CMS’s influence across the sector. The restructure is part of the CMS Group’s ongoing UK-wide commitment to deliver best-in-class façade solutions to high-profile building developments. This alongside its role as large-scale contractors refurbishing local authority housing stock across the UK.

CMS GROUP is headed up by Managing Director Stephen Anderson and Operations Director Martin McCrimmon – both of whom have worked with the business for over a decade.

The new structure is designed to streamline working with CMS for customers and suppliers, while allowing the business to continue to consolidate its position across each division.

CMS FAÇADES designs, manufactures, installs and maintains building envelope façades for clients across the UK. Working on numerous high-profile projects, the CMS Façades division has a strong track record of providing top-quality façade solutions to major contractors and developers.

CMS WINDOW SYSTEMS provides local authorities and registered social landlords (RSLs) across Scotland and the north of England with high performance PVCu windows and doors, composite doors and fire doors, for refurbishment projects and new-build developments. From its Castlecary headquarters, near Glasgow, its fabrication team manufactures up to 2,000 units every week. Products are installed by its skilled fitting teams or delivered to customers on a supply-only basis.

CMS TRADE is the newest arm of CMS Group. Launched in 2019, the division has grown rapidly – a competitive edge gained through its focus on product quality and customer service. CMS Trade operates from a dedicated 25,000 sq. ft. factory in East Kilbride. It manufactures PVCu and Aluminium windows and doors for trade customers right across Scotland and the north of England.

CMS team raises over £1200 to support disadvantaged families this Christmas

Staff from CMS Group have raised more than £1200 in a year-long fundraising campaign for the Christmas appeal of Kirkcaldy-based charity The Cottage Family Centre.

Every December the charity undertakes a mammoth operation to mobilise a team of volunteers to deliver crates containing food, children’s toys and clothing to over 1300 children and their families throughout the Kirkcaldy area. This festive support helps parents to provide for their families over the Christmas period and ensures vulnerable children receive presents from ‘Santa’ and do not go hungry.

Members of the CMS team, led by its contracts manager John Deacon, volunteer every year to provide hands-on support for this exercise, including the use of its vans for deliveries and a facility at the company’s Hayfield site for storage, preparation of the crates and distribution. This year the team has gone the extra mile by raising money over the past 12 months to enable the Cottage Family Centre to purchase more items for inclusion in the crates.

Pauline Buchan, strategic manager at the Cottage Family Centre said: “We’d like to say a big thank you to the team at CMS who have always played a big part in helping us get packages to so many families on our Christmas appeal delivery day. The extra donation is so very welcome to help us make sure that no child in our area will go without at Christmas.”

The Cottage Family Centre’s Christmas appeal delivery day will take place on Wednesday 23 December 2020 when volunteers will deliver crates to over 1300 children and their families. The space provided by CMS Group at its Hayfield Industrial Estate facility gives the charity a conveniently located logistical hub for the operation.

CMS staff go wild for John Muir biodiversity award

Staff at CMS Group, are voluntarily taking part in a programme to help wildlife thrive at its main manufacturing site and have been recognised for their efforts by leading UK wildness charity, the John Muir Trust.

Members of the CMS ‘EnviroChamps’ team have achieved their John Muir Award at the Discovery level in acknowledgement of their work so far in discovering, exploring, conserving and sharing the natural outdoor spaces surrounding CMS’ HQ near Glasgow. The HQ’s 15 acre site features large areas of natural woodland and freshwater habitats running parallel to the Forth and Clyde Canal and the popular John Muir Way walking trail, making it a locally very significant site.

Spanning an age range from late teens to late fifties, the employee team has members from across the company’s departments. They are invited to share ideas and work together to be advocates for the environment as part of a group effort, ultimately allowing as many people as possible to take part in understanding and lending a hand in implementing the company’s overall biodiversity strategy.

Their work has so far included regular litter picks, placing pollinating plants around the main CMS reception area and installing bird boxes, bat boxes and bee B&Bs to allow a sheltered habitat for many different types of wildlife. Many of the boxes were made using recycled materials from the CMS factory yard, with others sustainably sourced.

The work of the EnviroChamps team is fundamental to CMS Group’s biodiversity strategy, which is one of the most extensive of its kind by a window and door manufacturing business. This programme is designed to not only conserve and enhance natural habitats, but support staff health and wellbeing by providing opportunities for employees to get involved in a hands-on way and develop their own understanding of environmental sustainability.

Amy Ledger, Environmental Advisor at the CMS Group says, “The gaining of the John Muir Discovery Award by the EnviroChamps team is fantastic recognition of the hard work of everyone involved. The award is really important to ensure we deliver the best outcomes in terms of preserving and enhancing the woodland and freshwater biomes at our HQ site, and do this in an inclusive way so any employee can get involved for the benefit of their health both physically and mentally.”

The John Muir Award is an environmental award scheme focused on wild places. It helps people connect with, enjoy, and care for wild places in a non-competitive, inclusive and accessible way. Designed so that any organisation can get involved, it seeks to encourage staff to strive for conservation and help them to truly understand the wonder that the outdoors can bring, even if it’s just during a lunch break.

The biodiversity programme is just one part of the CMS Group’s environmental and social sustainability strategy which spans everything from recycling, waste reduction and energy efficiency to providing apprenticeships and supporting charities that help strengthen communities.

 

CMS director wins prestigious IoD Scotland award for sustainability

CMS Operations Director, Martin McCrimmon, has been named the 2020 Institute of Directors (IoD) Scotland Director of the Year – ‘Social Value & Sustainability Impact’ at this year’s virtual awards ceremony, in recognition of his achievements in delivering the company’s pioneering sustainability strategy over the past 14 years.

In winning the inaugural ‘Social Value & Sustainability Impact’ award, sponsored by Zero Waste Scotland, Martin has triumphed in a category that aims to honour the most ethical, socially responsible or ‘green’ business leaders in Scotland and the UK.

Speaking of Martin’s achievements, the IoD Scotland Director of the Year Awards judges said:

“Martin clearly demonstrates a real passion for achieving environmental targets and social impact and has proven how financial and business success can go hand in hand with environmental sustainability. He shows strong evidence of leadership and strategic decision-making. Martin is driven by ethics and values, with investment in supporting young people and excluded groups into employment. Martin has clearly placed a specific focus on achieving sustainable growth, including through the employment of a full-time environmental advisor.”

Martin is directly responsible for CMS’s sustainability strategy. Supported by a team which includes a full time in-house environmental advisor – Amy Ledger – this strategy has pioneered new approaches to how a window, door and curtain walling manufacturing and installation business can operate. The result has been to minimise its carbon footprint and protect and enhance its local environment, whilst providing customers with dependable solutions that enable them to reach their own sustainability targets.

Three ‘zero landfill’ years in a row for CMS Group

Leading facades, window and door designer, manufacturer and installer the CMS Group has reported another 12 months in which none of its production or post-consumer waste was sent to landfill, making it three ‘zero landfill’ years in a row.

In its last financial year (2019-2020) CMS handled 2,802 tonnes of waste, generated mainly from post-use windows and doors that its installers remove during replacement contracts but also including waste from its office and factory operations – all of which is strictly recycled as standard. Of this waste, 3.1% was reused, 96.5% was sent to be recycled and where possible remade into new products eg new glass double glazed units, and the remaining 0.4% was used by waste-to-energy specialists.

This latest ‘zero landfill’ achievement by CMS maintains its position at the forefront of sustainability in the facades, window and door market, and reflects the long-term success of its business strategy. Ever since its inception in 2006, the company has operated its own full scale in-house waste processing facilities to collect and separate all waste resulting from its manufacturing, installation and office functions.

Any post-use windows and doors extracted from properties during replacement contracts are collected on site and taken to CMS’s Castlecary site to be separated into their constituent parts – mainly PVCu, timber, aluminium, glass and steel – which is then sent to specialist recyclers. The team also identify products that can be re-used to ensure they completely avoid entering a waste stream, and the tiny proportion of materials that cannot be re-used or recycled are sent to waste-to-energy specialists

In line with its ‘closed-loop’ ethos, CMS also continues to ensure that its aluminium profile, PVCu systems and glass contain a high degree of recycled material for the manufacture of new facades, windows and doors. For example, through its long term partnership with Saint-Gobain Glass, double glazed units installed by CMS contain 38% of post-use recycled glass – an industry leading level.

CMS Operations Director, Martin McCrimmon, said: “Hitting our zero landfill target for a third year in a row is a tremendous achievement and reflects the dedication and effort of the whole team in maintaining the highest levels of sustainable manufacturing and installation. Waste reduction and elimination is only going to become more important right across the construction and housing sectors as we work towards the zero carbon target dates set by Scottish and UK governments, so it is pleasing that we are already providing a successful model for the fenestration industry.”

Waste reduction is a core part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which the CMS Group’s business strategy is closely aligned with. This “shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future” is underpinned by 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including ‘Quality Education’, ‘Decent Work & Economic Growth’ and ‘Responsible Production & Consumption’.

 

CMS helps distribute hand sanitiser to local care providers

Staff from CMS Group have helped in the effort to ensure carers and key workers can provide their services in a safe environment during the coronavirus crisis by organising the delivery of hand sanitiser, produced by a well-known spirits manufacturer, to organisations in Glasgow and North Lanarkshire.

Working with the global drinks brand, who are manufacturing the anti-bacterial gel and supplying it via their distribution centre in Glasgow, CMS used one of its electric vans to deliver the in-demand products to their final destinations in emissions-free fashion.

CMS Operations Director made the deliveries of hand sanitiser bottles and drums to four organisations, all of which play a vital role in supporting local communities.

First up in Glasgow was Royston Youth Action. This organisation provides facilities for recreation, education or leisure time for young people, children and families living or working in their local area. It will need hand sanitiser to be able to reopen its much-needed and popular facilities.

Two other organisations to benefit – Northgate House care home in Balornock and Skye View Care Centre in Airdrie – provide healthcare and personal support to those living with dementia. And the final drop off was at St. Andrews Hospice which is a registered charity providing specialist palliative care to people living with life-limiting illnesses across Lanarkshire.

 

CMS director shortlisted for prestigious IoD Scotland award

The achievements of CMS Groups’ sustainability strategy over the past 14 years have been formally recognised by the Institute of Directors (IoD) Scotland with an award shortlisting for the man who has been behind the strategy since day one, CMS’s Operations Director Martin McCrimmon.

Martin is a finalist for the first ever ‘Social Value & Sustainability Impact’ award in the IoD Scotland 2020 Director of the Year Awards. This new award recognises the most ethical, socially responsible or green business leaders in Scotland and the UK, with judges looking for directors who demonstrate good awareness of the impact of their business on all aspects of society, including economic, social, and environmental.

In his role at CMS, Martin is directly responsible for devising and delivering the organisation’s sustainability strategy. Supported by a knowledgeable team which includes a full time in-house environmental advisor – Amy Ledger – this strategy has pioneered new approaches to how a window, door and curtain walling manufacturing and installation business can operate. The result has been to minimise its carbon footprint and protect and enhance its local community, whilst providing customers with dependable solutions that enable them to reach their own sustainability targets.

Some of the most significant successes of CMS’s sustainability strategy relate to the reduction of waste. For the past two years, the company has diverted 100% of waste away from landfill thanks to its highly efficient in-house recycling processes and facilities – with 97% going to specialist recyclers and 3% to waste-to-energy companies. The company has also implemented a biodiversity programme to enhance the wildlife around its sites, and it continues to support local communities and staff through charitable donations and pioneering initiatives like its ‘Be Well’ mental health awareness and training programme.

Parliamentary call for CMS to share sustainability best practice

Representatives from CMS Group have been invited to share their story of how a growing manufacturing business can make a positive contribution to a sustainable, low carbon future at a special event held recently at the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh.

A select group of pioneering businesses who have previously won a VIBES Award – the Scottish environment business awards programme, which is backed by the Scottish government and has been running for 20 years – were invited to take part in a panel discussion chaired by Scottish Government advisor, Ross Martin.

Representing CMS on this panel was its full time in-house environmental advisor Amy Ledger, who drives the company’s sustainability strategy to ensure its ambitious goals – including its zero waste to landfill target – are achieved. Attended by around 80 people, including nine Members of the Scottish Parliament (MSPs), the VIBES Celebrations Event was organised to provide an opportunity for businesses, politicians and the public to learn about how good environmental practice can bring economic and social success.

Amy Ledger said: “Winning the Best of VIBES Award at the end of last year was a tremendous achievement for CMS, particularly given the very high calibre of winners in this highly respected awards programme over the past two decades. Being able to share our story with other like-minded businesses, individuals and policy-makers was an honour, and hopefully helps others to implement their own carbon reduction and social improvement strategies.”

In addition to winning the Best of VIBES Award in 2019, CMS has received a number of accolades in recent years which recognise its track record on environmental and social sustainability. These include the G19 ‘Sustainability Initiative of the Year’ Award, the Queen’s Award for Enterprise: Sustainable Development and a Green World Award. The company, which is Scotland’s largest manufacturer and designer of aluminium and PVCu windows, doors and curtain walling, was also one of the first fenestration companies in the UK to become a Living Wage Employer in 2015 and, through its CMS Academy, it has provided over 100 apprenticeships since 2006.

 

CMS reduces carbon footprint further with latest electric van investment

Scotland’s Minister for Business, Fair Work and Skills, Jamie Hepburn MSP, has welcomed the addition of new 100% electric vans to the CMS Group vehicle fleet, along with its investment in its electric vehicle infrastructure.

The company, which is Scotland’s largest designer, manufacturer and installer of aluminium façades and PVCu windows, doors and curtain walling, has taken delivery of a fully branded Nissan e-NV200 van, following the successful trial of its first electric vehicle over the last 18 months. With a range of up to 187 miles on a single charge, these vans are ideal for serving CMS customers in the areas within close proximity to its main Castlecary factory and HQ near Glasgow, giving ample scope for emissions-free site deliveries throughout the working day.

In addition to the vans currently in service, CMS is looking at how longer range and larger vans could be added to its fleet as the technology rapidly evolves. CMS has also added further plug-in charging points at Castlecary, bringing the total to four, with charging facilities also soon to be installed at its East Kilbride and Kirkcaldy sites. This charging infrastructure will also support the growing numbers of visitors to its sites who travel using electric vehicles.

The move by CMS to make its fleet operations ‘greener’ is an important part of its long-term sustainability strategy, which enables the company to be continuously reducing its carbon emissions while working towards net zero carbon by 2045. Its significant sustainability achievements to date were recently recognised in two major industry awards programmes, with CMS winning both the G19 Award for ‘Sustainability Initiative of the Year’ and the Best of VIBES Award, which recognises the long term contribution that the company has made to Scotland’s environmental goals for business.

Speaking on a recent visit, Jamie Hepburn MSP, who is also the local member of parliament for Cumbernauld, said: “It’s great see CMS Group continuing to grow and invest locally, including in this fleet of electric vehicles.  This will let them significantly cut their transport-related carbon emissions. It is a welcome example of a local company looking to the future and being pro-active in transitioning towards a carbon-neutral society. I would hope other local companies would recognise the advantages of moving to electric vehicles for commercial purposes and that they look to follow CMS’s lead.”

CMS joins mammoth Christmas effort to help families suffering hardship

A team from CMS Group was amongst an army of volunteers who joined forces just before Christmas to deliver hundreds of packages of donated food, children’s clothes and toys to families in Kirkcaldy, Fife who are struggling to make ends meet.

The delivery day was part of the 2019 Christmas Appeal by the Cottage Family Centre, a charity which provides a range of support to families and individuals within family units who are vulnerable to social exclusion. Now in its ninth year, the appeal delivers much-needed donations direct to families living in one of Scotland’s most disadvantaged communities so they can have an enjoyable Christmas.

A fleet of 40 vehicles including CMS vans mobilised to deliver £32,000 worth of fresh food, plus sacks of brand new children’s toys and clothes which ensured scores of youngsters had something to open on Christmas morning. A total of 1,271 people received the support, an increase of 20% from 2018. In addition to the vans and hands-on support on the delivery day, CMS also provided warehousing for the donations in the run-up to the day itself, at its Hayfield site in Kirkcaldy.

CMS has been a long term supporter of the Cottage Family Centre, driven by the commitment of its Contract Manager John Deacon, who was honoured at the recent G19 Awards for his extensive charity support by being presented with the Unsung Hero award. John was joined on the delivery day by colleagues from CMS’ HQ in Cumbernauld, as well as those based at CMS’ facilities in Kirkcaldy, who swapped their day jobs at CMS to load up and deliver the festive packages across Kirkcaldy, alongside volunteers from numerous other local businesses and Fife Council.

Pauline Buchan, Cottage Family Centre manager said: “On behalf of everyone in the Cottage Family Centre team, I’d like to sincerely thank everyone who donated items or money to our appeal and those who helped with our deliveries. Whilst we must support families in our community all year round, as a result of everyone’s efforts here it is pleasing that hundreds of families and children will be able to enjoy the Christmas festivities that little bit more.

“A very special thanks goes to everyone who has been with us since we moved out of our centre in 2015, as the need for this support at Christmas has become greater. In particular, John Deacon and the CMS team – no words can describe how much we appreciate your ongoing support and the care and kindness you show, not only to us as a team but to our families. Your team are simply the best and we couldn’t do what we do without them, always on hand whenever needed.”

The Cottage Family Centre is one of a number of community-based good causes that CMS Window Systems supports as part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility. In 2019, it helped causes ranging from The Halliday Foundation, a charity that supports homeless people living on the streets of Glasgow, to South Ayrshire Council’s annual community fun day and the Beatson Cancer Charity.
